Living, working, communicating. We designed this special issue of Metropolis—about the city of the (near) future—as a kind of World's Fair, with an exuberant optimism about things to come. The cover features a concept for a universal housing block by SYSTEMarchitects. Inside, everything starts with an imaginary transit map that locates the stories within a city of ideas. The pages inside recreate the urban landscape using layered photos and typography. And the centerfold features the skyline of 2010 as seen by illustrators Nicholas Blechman and Christoph Niemann.
